“Eternal Solitude”

When I started thinking about Eternal Solitude I wasn’t sure how to approach it. I wrestled with questions of place, season, color and mood. I didn’t know the answer.

Looking at my sketch book, I went back to a theme I’ve been playing with. I have an image of a marsh that I grabbed online a few years ago, titled The Fen at Dawn. The original image is atmospheric, misty, romantic. When I transferred it as a tonal drawing in gouache, it became cold and lonely.

I tried to incorporate the cool grays in the setting, using oxidized sterling with a touch of gold with teardrop spinels. Eternal solitude is silent and cold, and silence is golden with a an occasional teardrop shed. I’m not usually good at using metaphors in my work, but I gave it a go here.

The water lily is actually I piece I did last year, finally got around to setting it. Hoping to do a series of these in the coming year.
